The latest edition of the ISA Technical Report TR 84.00.07-2026 has now been published.

This is Guidance on the Evaluation of Fire, Combustible Gas, and Toxic Gas System Effectiveness approved August 2026;

  • Provides guidance on implementation of Fire and Gas Systems FGS using the underlying principles of ANSI/ISA 6151
  • Does not mandate Safety Integrity Levels (SIL) for FGS
  • Integrates into new standard ANSI/ISA 84.91.03-2025 Functional Safety: Low Integrity Protection Layers
  • This is an incremental update of FGS guidelines since the 2018 issuance; it is not a general rewrite of the FGS Technical Report.
  • It provides additional informative guidance on how to determine the effectiveness of FGS mitigation actions.
  • It updates the semi-quantitative hazard evaluation method, improving evaluation of liquefied gases, including those stored and handled as refrigerated or pressurized liquids.
  • It clarifies that the methods can be applied non-hydrocarbon applications including gases such as hydrogen.
  • It provides additional guidance on design factors that affect coverage in a specified array of fire or gas detectors.
  • It better integrates FGS implementation guidance related to claims on risk reduction associated with either ANSI/ISA 61511 (where risk reduction exceeding a factor of 10) as well as lower integrity applications under new ANSI/ISA 84.93.03-2025 Functional Safety: Low Integrity Protection Layers.

The update was led by our own Kevin Mitchell, Vice President at Kenexis. We’re proud of the work he and the ISA84 committee put into it.  As a result of Kevin’s hard work and dedication, he received an ISA84 Committee Leadership Award.
