What is STL Studio?
STL Studio is a free desktop application developed by Kenexis (installation link below). While primarily designed to simplify the import of 3D models into our Effigy™ Fire and Gas Mapping software, it is a versatile tool that allows users to modify STL files for any purpose.
Before importing your models, STL Studio empowers you to make critical changes, including:
- Translations & Rotations
- Resizing (Scaling)
- File Size Reduction
- Clipping (removing specific regions from the model)
Focused on Flexibility and Precision
Based on valuable user feedback, STL Studio now focuses heavily on flexibility and precision. We are confident the latest version will streamline your 3D asset preparation workflow significantly.
Here is what you can expect in the current version:
- The Power to “Undo”
We know that experimentation is part of the design process. You no longer need to worry about accidental clicks or operations that don’t look quite right. We have added full Undo and Redo buttons, allowing you to revert or re-apply your most recent operation instantly.
- Selective Mesh Operations
Working with complex scenes just got easier. If you have multiple meshes in a single workspace, you can now select specific meshes to edit. Operations will only apply to the items you have selected, leaving the rest of your workspace untouched.
- Smart Facet Reduction
Reducing file size usually means sacrificing detail—but not anymore. When reducing the file size, you can now use a selection box to “protect” specific areas. This ensures that critical details retain their facet count while the rest of the model is optimized.
- Enhanced Visualization and Analysis
We’ve added a suite of tools to help you measure and analyze your models more effectively:

- Visual Scale: A new option in the “View” menu displays a grid with numerical indicators, giving you an immediate sense of scale.
- Unit Conversion: A built-in calculator now allows you to easily convert units (e.g., mm to inches) via a simple dropdown menu.
- Volume Calculation: When using the clipping tool, the software now calculates and displays the percentage of the file size contained within your selected volume.
