An instrumented protective function (IPF) is a “control loop” that is utilized for a safety purpose. The term is very similar to Safety Instrumented Function (SIF) as defined in the IEC 61511 (ISA 84.00.01) standard except that IPF is meant to be more all-encompassing, including protective functions that are not necessarily safety related – protecting assets or the environment, for instance. While all SIF are IPF, not all IPF are SIF.
Adding a new IPF can be done in two ways, either clicking the “Add” button in the action ribbon and selecting IPF from the list, or “Add IPF” button at the top left of the IPF list on the IPF list page. The video below demonstrates how this is done.
