An Instrumented Protective Function (IPF) is a control loop used for a protective purpose. The term is similar to Safety Instrumented Function (SIF) as defined in IEC 61511 (ISA 84.00.01), but broader in scope — an IPF encompasses any protective function, including those designed to protect assets or the environment, not just those that are strictly safety-related. Put simply: all SIFs are IPFs, but not all IPFs are SIFs.
New IPFs can be added in two ways: by clicking the Add button in the action ribbon and selecting IPF from the list, or by clicking the Add IPF button at the top left of the IPF list page.
