On a frequent basis Kenexis identifies issues surrounding the implementation of engineered safeguards and
application of industry standards for these safeguards that require additional research and explanation. Guidance on resolving
these issues is provided to our staff in the form of technical memos.
TM - 010 - Acceptable Sharing of BPCS and SIS Field Measurements
Many users of safety automation equipment employ a practice of using redundant field devices for safety-critical
process measurements. Occasionally, these redundant devices are used for both safety and process control applications. In general,
separation of SIS and BPCS components are the ideal design from the standpoint of safety. However, for a small number of
applications separation of field devices is not always required . This memo reveals potential applications where the use of
shared field devices may be acceptable as well as addressing the strengths and weaknesses of a design using shared devices.

TM - 005 - BPCS / SIS Separation Requirements
In some cases, separation of the BPCS and SIS is absolutely essential. This memo presents some guidelines for when
separation is required, and when some degree of overlap can be accepted.

TM - 004 - Motor Start SIL Verification Issues
Pump and compressor motor starters are a very common final element of safety functions in the process industries. SIL
verification conceptual design requires understanding of the details of how various motor starters work and what is represented in
their reported failure characteristics.

TM - 003 - Sulfur Recovery Unit Back Flow Scenario
A sulfur recovery unit (SRU) safety instrumented function that has significant potential consequence, but is not
often safeguarded against is explained and recommendations for inclusion in SRU SIS design basis studies are provided.

TM - 002 - IPF Naming Conventions
This memo explains the Kenexis standard naming convention for the description of instrumented protective function actions.
This memo should be used as a basis for completing the IPF Description column in the Kenexis SIS Design Basis Toolkit.
